A Lesson in Labels, Lasagna, and Letting Ourselves Change
One of the biggest misconceptions I see in spiritual spaces is the idea that Ego is “bad” and Spirit is “good.”
That’s never been my experience.
In Talking With The Universe, I teach that Spirit and Ego are meant to work together. Spirit brings expansion, intuition, and openness. Ego helps us create identity, structure, and action in the physical world.
And oddly enough… my teenage son demonstrated this perfectly over supper.
For years, he has insisted he hates chicken Alfredo.
So when I made chicken Alfredo lasagna with leftover rotisserie chicken, I didn’t make a big announcement about what it was. I simply served supper.
And suddenly:
- He loved it.
- He called it “delicious cheese noodles.”
- He wanted seconds.
Then I told him the truth:
“This is chicken Alfredo.”
Cue the confusion. 😂
What fascinated me wasn’t the reaction itself — it was what it represented.
His Spirit was fully in the present moment enjoying the experience.
His Ego immediately referenced the identity and belief it already held:
“I don’t like chicken Alfredo.”
Neither response was wrong.
Spirit allowed him to experience something openly.
Ego tried to keep consistency with the identity he had created.
That’s what Ego does. It creates familiarity and helps us navigate the world through past experiences, preferences, beliefs, and self-concepts. The issue isn’t Ego itself — the issue happens when Ego becomes so rigid that it stops us from allowing new experiences to exist alongside old beliefs.
And honestly? Adults do this all the time too.
We decide:
- “I’m not creative.”
- “I’m not intuitive.”
- “That could never work for me.”
- “That’s not who I am.”
Then Spirit quietly offers us an entirely different experience… if we’re willing to stay open long enough to receive it.
Sometimes growth doesn’t arrive through deep meditation or life-changing revelations.
Sometimes it arrives disguised as “cheese noodles” and a teenage identity crisis at the supper table. 😂
